Lethbridge Hugo George Sangiovese Merlot 2018

Lethbridge Hugo George is a Sangiovese-led red blended with Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Named for Maree Collis and Ray Nadeson's son, this has been bottled five times in twenty years, because the Brunello-clone Sangiovese on the property is difficult: vigorous vines, big bunches, big berries. Low yields are non-negotiable in this cellar, so in a given season Nadeson will drop up to three-quarters of the crop to get where he wants to be. Merlot takes 31 per cent of the blend and Cabernet Franc 19. The batches fermented separately, were blended, then matured fifteen months in new wood, followed by three years resting in bottle before release.

Sweet and savoury at once, with a sour-cherry tang, plump red fruit and a well-judged balance of flavour, texture and richness. The tannin is firm and food-friendly. Serve at 16 degrees. Good with osso buco, a tomato and beef ragù, roast lamb or pecorino.
