Lethbridge 'il regalo di compleanno' Nebbiolo 2020

Lethbridge 'il regalo di compleanno' Nebbiolo is a Pyrenees Nebbiolo from the Malakoff vineyard near Landsborough.

The name means birthday present, and it goes back to 2013, when Maree Collis bought two tonnes of Nebbiolo from Robert John and surprised Ray Nadeson with it. Eleven consecutive vintages later the arrangement is settled: Cameron and Robert John's Malakoff vineyard, first planted in 1997 at 300 metres on a moderate, sheltered northeast slope, with red ferrous clay full of ironstone and quartz. Collis and Nadeson take all the fruit from their chosen blocks and help make the calls on them. The 2020 macerated five days, fermented long and cool, and saw thirty days on skins all told, then two years in oak, puncheon first and foudre second, and eighteen months in bottle.

Brightly fragrant, with red fruit and dried flowers, brown spice and a stony thread running through coiled tannin to a long close. The variety's grip is there without any heaviness. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted. Match it with braised veal, mushroom risotto or aged Parmigiano.
