Lethbridge JD Drumborg Chardonnay 2023

Lethbridge JD Drumborg Chardonnay is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from schist soils in Henty.

Drumborg is cold, windy and stingy, and the fruit out of Jack and Lois Doeven's vineyard there has long gone into Lethbridge Riesling and Pinot Gris, as well as sparkling wine, the style the region was originally planted for. As the climate has warmed, the Chardonnay has started to show character worth chasing on its own, so instead of picking it all early for bubbles, Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis decided to spare nothing and make a still wine from it. Fruit is harvested by hand, pressed whole and fermented on wild yeast in new French oak, then taken through full malolactic conversion before maturing in 50 per cent new barrels.

Flinty and mineral, finely structured, with an acid line the winemakers describe as reminiscent of somewhere in the old world they are not allowed to name. Serve at 12 degrees. Try it with oysters, grilled crayfish, roast chicken or a piece of Comté.
