Lethbridge Le Droit 2021

Lethbridge Le Droit is a Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend from two cool Geelong sites.

Half Merlot, 42 per cent Cabernet Franc and 8 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon in 2021. Tim Harrop planted the lower site, three kilometres from the estate on the river flats, to all three varieties in the 1990s; it is cool and low in vigour, with rocky basalt soils full of quartz. The home vineyard adds Merlot and Cabernet Franc from mid-1990s plantings on basalt over limestone. Parcels are destemmed and fermented apart, then matured eighteen months in fine-grained new and one-year-old French oak. Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis built it as the right-bank half of a pair with La Gauche.

Dark berry, liquorice and spice over a voluptuous mid-palate, with Cabernet Franc leaf and violet lifting the top. Tannin is round, acid keeps it tidy. Serve at 17 degrees. Try it with braised beef, duck, lamb with herbs, or Comté and walnuts.
