Lethbridge Mietta Pinot Noir 2020

Lethbridge Mietta Pinot Noir is a single-block MV6 Pinot Noir from the coolest corner of the estate.

Picking late is the key decision on this block. The Top Block is one of the region's coldest patches of ground, so the bunches get extra hang time to build flavour and structure, and Ray Nadeson waits until the peduncles have properly lignified before harvesting, since most of the fruit ferments as whole bunches. The vines went in during the mid-1990s, the first planted when the property was revived, and they sit on black clay, basalt and limestone, all MV6, cropping low. The 2020 fermented spontaneously in open-top vessels with 80 per cent bunches, then eleven months in new wood and three years in bottle.

Perfumed and firm, with red and black cherry, dried herb, spice from the stems and a long mineral finish. Give it air. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Good with duck breast, roast pork, mushroom pappardelle or a soft goat's cheese.
