Description
Lethbridge Shiraz is a restrained, Rhône-leaning single-vineyard Shiraz from Geelong.
Craiglee, Pat Carmody's Sunbury Shiraz, and the Rhône growers Ray Nadeson admires are the reference points here, which explains why this reads more like Syrah than Barossa Shiraz. The 2013 came off 35-year-old vines at Mount Duneed Estate cropping under a tonne to the acre. Fruit was hand-picked and destemmed, left to macerate eight days before fermentation began in 500-litre open vats with daily punch-downs, then pressed to oak, a quarter of it new, for eleven months. Nothing in that sequence is designed to add weight; it is all aimed at getting the site into the glass.
Mature now, with black pepper, dried herb, sweet leather and dark fruit over settled tannin. It has lost its edges and kept its line. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. Try it with roast lamb, braised beef, duck or a plate of hard sheep's cheese.
