Lethbridge Shiraz 2021

Lethbridge Shiraz is a single-block Moorabool Valley Shiraz from the St Peters clone.

Block 6 sits in the home vineyard, the coolest site in the region at 270 metres, planted in 1996 on thin black clay above bluestone, honeycomb basalt and limestone. The block itself went in during 1998 to the St Peters clone, whose Australian history runs back to Seppelt's St Peters vineyard at Great Western, first planted in 1863. Fruit was hand-picked and fermented spontaneously in small open-top vessels with half whole bunches, then given more than thirty days on skins before eleven months in 30 per cent new French oak. Ray Nadeson takes his cues from the Rhône and from Craiglee, not from warm-climate Australia.

Generous, silky and savoury, mid-weight, with stony mineral nuance running under dark fruit and pepper. Radiantly structured. Serve at 16 degrees. Match it with lamb shoulder, a beef and olive stew, duck sausages or grilled eggplant.
