Lethbridge Springbank Pinot Noir 2023

Lethbridge Springbank Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Bannockburn.

Red clay over limestone with ironstone buckshot through it carries MV6, 114 and 115 planted at Springbank in 2001, and the Moorabool Valley's inland position gives the wine a firmer frame than the coastal sites. Fruit is hand-picked and wild-fermented with around half whole bunches, matured in 50 per cent new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. 2023 was cool and small-cropping with a long ripening season, a standout year for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the region, and the Moorabool Valley vineyards in particular turned out unusually elegant wines.

Firm and finely drawn, with dark cherry, iron, dried herb and whole-bunch spice over a mineral tannin frame. Serve at 15 degrees, and give it air if you open it young. Match it with duck, roast pork, mushroom risotto or a washed-rind cheese.
