Lethbridge 'The JD' Henty Pinot Noir 2023

Lethbridge 'The JD' Henty Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Drumborg in Victoria's far south-west.

Jack and Lois Doeven planted their 40-hectare Henty site in the 1980s on schist, and for years it fed Seppelt's sparkling programme; Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir still dominate the plantings. Ray Nadeson has drawn on the vineyard for more than twenty years and now takes the whole Riesling and Pinot crop, which gives him a real say in how it is farmed and keeps yields low. As the climate warms, some Pinot parcels here are good enough to earmark for still wine. The clone is Mariafield, Swiss in origin, open-bunched, softer than MV6 and more high-toned. Hand-picked, a twenty-day ferment with a few bunches, eleven months in barrel.

Perfume, summer berries, brown spice and earth, with fleshy weight and a savoury finish. Nadeson describes the Geelong Pinots as a slap on the bass drum and this one as the snap of a snare. Serve at 15 degrees. Good with duck, roast pork or mushrooms on toast.
