Lethbridge Vaughan Pinot Gris 2023

Lethbridge Vaughan Pinot Gris is a single-vineyard Pinot Gris from Drumborg in Henty.

For close to two decades Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis have bought fruit from Angela and Larry Vaughan's old Drumborg vineyard, and the quality of the long, cool 2023 season finally justified bottling it on its own. The vines went in during the 1980s on limestone and clay, and yields are very low, which is a prerequisite here. Nadeson picks Gris late for flavour and texture, and in a marginal climate like Drumborg that means holding his nerve well into April. Several picking passes feed small-batch ferments, split between tank and new wood, some parcels with 24 hours on skins and others going carbonic in amphora, then matures on fine lees in foudre.

Orange citrus, high-toned florals, ginger and baking spice over rich orchard fruit, with a saline edge from the limestone and weighty texture held in check by cool acid. Proper Gris. Serve at 11 degrees. Good with roast pork, duck rillettes or washed-rind cheese.
