Lignier-Michelot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Murgers 2013

Lignier-Michelot Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Murgers is a premier cru red Burgundy from the stony northern end of the appellation, on the boundary with Vosne-Romanee.

Nuits-Saint-Georges runs for several kilometres along the Cote de Nuits and changes character from one end to the other. Aux Murgers sits in the northern sector, immediately alongside Vosne-Romanee, and takes its name from the heaps of stones cleared from the vineyard; the soil there is shallow, pebbly limestone scree, which gives wines that are firm but finer boned than the darker, iron-rich cuvees of the southern side. Pinot Noir is the only grape permitted. Lignier-Michelot is a small family domaine based in Morey-Saint-Denis, farming its parcels organically, fermenting in open vats and ageing the wine in oak barrel with a measured proportion of new wood before bottling.

Firm and savoury in youth, this is now a mature Burgundy suited to roast poultry, game birds and mushroom dishes; serve at around 16 degrees.
