Lis Neris Chardonnay 2023

Lis Neris Chardonnay is a white from Friuli, in the far north-east of Italy, from an estate that treats the grape as a serious ageing wine rather than an easy one.

Lis Neris is based at San Lorenzo Isontino on the Isonzo plain, south of the Collio hills and close to the Slovenian border, where gravel left by the river drains freely and warm days are followed by cool nights under the double influence of the Alps and the Adriatic. The Pecorari family have farmed here for several generations, and the estate built its modern reputation under Alvaro Pecorari on white wines given long ageing on their lees. The Chardonnay is fermented and matured partly in oak and partly in steel, then held back before release rather than rushed to market. Friuli is more closely associated with white wine than any other Italian region.

Serve lightly chilled with white meats, risotto or richer seafood.
