Little Reddie Nebbiolo Refosco 2025

Little Reddie Nebbiolo Refosco is a Heathcote red built from Nebbiolo and Refosco picked across several passes.

Harvest opened on 8 February with A Block at Willoughby Bridge, direct-pressed for rose, the tail of that press fermented dry in barrel and folded back in later. A second rose pick followed from A-W block. Unusually for Chalmers the Nebbiolo came in ahead of the Refosco, yields being very low; the macerated Nebbiolo here is all from the newer Chalmers planting, what remained after Pat Underwood had set aside rows for his own label. Components aged in a spread of stainless and oak vessels, each given the temperature and oxygen its tannins wanted, with pressings from the Colbinabbin reds blended in before a final spell in barrel.

Tar and dried rose from the Nebbiolo, dark plum and iron from the Refosco, and a tannin structure that is firm without being hard. Serve at 16 degrees with braised beef cheek, porcini risotto or a hard alpine cheese.
