Little Reddie Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso 2023

Little Reddie Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is a medium-bodied red grown on the red soils of Colbinabbin in Heathcote.

Fermentation is where this wine gets its shape. Fruit from three rows in the south-east corner of the Chalmers vineyard is destemmed into closed stainless-steel vats and pumped over daily, with plenty of splashing and deliberate exposure to air, the kind of handling that builds tannin early and keeps it supple. Pat Underwood presses when the phenolics read right, four weeks in this case, then matures the wine in tank before a spell in barrel. The 2015 plantings run east to west across the vineyard, which takes the sting out of the afternoon heat. Forty-five dozen made.

Fruit concentration is the story in 2023: dark cherry and blackberry, a savoury undertow and tannin that has been worked into silk. Serve around 16 degrees with slow-cooked lamb, a mushroom pie or aged pecorino.
