Description

Loujan Bas-Armagnac 12 Year Old is a Gascon brandy of three quarters Ugni Blanc and a quarter Baco, bottled at 43%.

Bas-Armagnac is the westernmost and most highly regarded of Armagnac's three sub-regions, a pocket of acid sandy soils known as sables fauves that give brandies of unusual delicacy. The grapes are the Gascon classics: Folle Blanche for florality, Ugni Blanc for freshness, and the hybrid Baco 22A for its rounder, plummier weight. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac is distilled once through a continuous alambic armagnacais at low strength, so more of the raw material survives into the spirit, and it is then aged in local black oak. Twelve years in black oak takes the spirit past its youthful stage into something noticeably rounder, and the quarter of Baco in the blend adds weight and a plummier fruit beneath the freshness that Ugni Blanc contributes.

A digestif style with enough age to be drunk on its own after dinner, and a good match for prunes, walnuts or dark chocolate; serve at room temperature.
