Description
Loujan Bas-Armagnac 5 Year Old is a young Gascon brandy made in equal parts from Folle Blanche and Ugni Blanc and bottled at 43%.
Bas-Armagnac is the westernmost and most highly regarded of Armagnac's three sub-regions, a pocket of acid sandy soils known as sables fauves that give brandies of unusual delicacy. The grapes are the Gascon classics: Folle Blanche for florality, Ugni Blanc for freshness, and the hybrid Baco 22A for its rounder, plummier weight. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac is distilled once through a continuous alambic armagnacais at low strength, so more of the raw material survives into the spirit, and it is then aged in local black oak. At five years the wood has had time to round the spirit off without burying the grape, and the even split between Folle Blanche and Ugni Blanc keeps both the florality of the first and the cut of the second in play.
The most versatile bottling in the range, good neat as a digestif and equally at home in a cocktail in place of cognac; serve at room temperature.
