Description
Loujan Bas-Armagnac is a single-harvest Gascon brandy made entirely from Baco and bottled at 43%.
Bas-Armagnac is the westernmost and most highly regarded of Armagnac's three sub-regions, a pocket of acid sandy soils known as sables fauves that give brandies of unusual delicacy. The grapes are the Gascon classics: Folle Blanche for florality, Ugni Blanc for freshness, and the hybrid Baco 22A for its rounder, plummier weight. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac is distilled once through a continuous alambic armagnacais at low strength, so more of the raw material survives into the spirit, and it is then aged in local black oak. Baco 22A is unique to Armagnac, a nineteenth century crossing kept on because it thrives in the sandy soils of the Bas and ages so well; on its own it gives a rounder, darker-fruited spirit than the white varieties. This is a single harvest, aged in black oak and bottled at 43%.
A digestif to be drunk neat after dinner, good with prunes, walnuts or dark chocolate; serve at room temperature.
