Description

Sandrone's Barbera d'Alba comes from four of the highest, most exposed sites in the Barolo zone, all farmed organically.

Barbera is Piedmont's workhorse red, naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, and its quality depends almost entirely on where it is planted and how the acidity is framed. Luciano Sandrone draws this wine from Cascina Pe Mol in Monforte d'Alba, Ravera and Rocche di San Nicola in Novello, and Albarella in the commune of Barolo, vineyards sitting between 350 and 450 metres. Rocche di San Nicola is extremely steep, at the very end of the Novello promontory, and its sun-trapping position brings the ripeness and texture needed to balance the variety's natural bite. All of the estate's vineyards are managed organically under Luca Sandrone. To give the wine shape without covering the fruit, it is matured in 500-litre tonneaux, about forty per cent of them new, made to the estate's specification in Burgundy from untoasted staves so that the wood reads as texture rather than flavour.

Good now and for six or eight years. A useful match for veal, mushroom risotto or a tomato-based pasta; serve at 16-18°C.

*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
