Description
Luciano Sandrone Barbera d'Alba is drawn from four high-lying sites across Barolo and Novello, and raised in untoasted tonneaux made for the estate.
Barbera d'Alba takes in the Langhe hills around Alba, where Barbera is generally given the ground not planted to Nebbiolo; the variety's high acidity and low tannin make site and elevation particularly important. Luciano Sandrone, one of the reference names of modern Barolo, draws this wine from four vineyards: Cascina Pe Mol, Ravera and Rocche di San Nicola at Novello, and Albarella at Barolo. At between 350 and 450 metres these are among the highest and most exposed sites in the region, which is where the wine's freshness and vibrancy come from. To balance the structure and acidity for which it is known, the wine is matured in 500-litre tonneaux, 40 per cent of them new; the estate has untoasted barrels made in Burgundy specifically for this cuvée so the wood stays discreet, and the integration becomes seamless with a little bottle age.
Drink over the next eight years, with agnolotti, braised veal or a mushroom risotto. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
