Description
Sandrone Barbera d'Alba comes from four of the highest and most exposed sites in the Barolo zone, and is raised in barrels made without toast.
Barbera keeps its acidity even in warm years and carries little tannin, which makes site selection and oak handling the two decisions that shape it. Sandrone draws on Cascina Pe Mol in Monforte d'Alba, Ravera and Rocche di San Nicola in Novello, and Albarella in the commune of Barolo, all sitting between 350 and 450 metres, high and open enough to hold freshness. To give the wine some frame without covering the fruit, it is matured in 500-litre tonneaux, around 40 per cent of them new. The estate has these barrels made to order in Burgundy and specifies untoasted staves, so the wood contributes texture rather than flavour. Young bottles show a little of it on the nose; with time in bottle it folds in completely, leaving the fleshy black-fruited weight and herbal edge of Monforte fruit.
Drinking well from release and holding for five to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with braised pork, tomato-based pasta or a rich mushroom polenta.
