Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste in magnum is the estate's flagship, made entirely from the Cannubi Boschis vineyard.

The name changed but the wine did not: Aleste is still 100 per cent Cannubi Boschis, the Barolo vineyard synonymous with this grower. The Boschis subzone lies near the northern end of the Cannubi hill, directly across from the Sandrone cellars. The estate farms 1.9 hectares of 40-year-old vines here, with a particularly good south and south-east exposure in a small amphitheatre, or conca, that holds early morning warmth. The soils are marine deposits of calcareous clay with sand and drain very well. Masnaghetti's Enciclopedia delle Grandi Vigne del Barolo notes that wines from this terroir generally have good body, much elegance and more polished tannins than other Cannubi wines. Winemaking follows Le Vigne, with a little longer on skins, ageing in mainly used 500-litre French oak casks and bottling unfiltered. Where Le Vigne is lifted and perfumed, Aleste is deeper, darker and more mineral.

The magnum will slow its evolution and reward two decades of patience; decant when young. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, hare or aged hard cheeses.
