Description
Aleste is Sandrone's single-vineyard Barolo from Cannubi Boschis, sold under the vineyard's own name from 1985 until 2012.
Cannubi Boschis is part of the Cannubi ridge running through the commune of Barolo, a south-east facing slope of moderately compact marl that gives Nebbiolo perfume and finesse alongside real structure. Luciano Sandrone bought his first plot on the hill in 1977 while working as a cellarman elsewhere, made his first wine in 1978 in his parents' garage and built the present winery in 1998; he died in 2023, and the estate is run by his daughter Barbara, who has managed it since 1989. From the 2013 vintage the wine has been called Aleste, a name made from those of his grandchildren Alessia and Stefano. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in open steel tanks, ageing takes place in 500-litre French oak tonneaux rather than barriques or large botti, and the wine rests around eighteen months in bottle before release.
Best given a decade and capable of far longer; decant if you open it early. Serve with braised or roasted red meat, truffle dishes or hard alpine cheese at 16-18°C.
