Description
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Aleste is 100 per cent Cannubi Boschis, the vineyard synonymous with this grower, here in a three-litre double magnum.
The name on the label changed some years ago, but the wine did not: Sandrone's flagship Barolo remains entirely from Cannubi Boschis. The Boschis subzone lies near the northern end of the Cannubi hill, directly across from the Sandrone cellars, where the family farms 1.9 hectares of 40-year-old vines. The exposure is south and south-east within a small amphitheatre, locally called a conca, which holds warmth through the early morning, and the soils are sea deposits of calcareous clay with sand, giving excellent drainage. Alessandro Masnaghetti's survey of the Barolo vineyards notes that wines from here generally have good body, much elegance and more polished tannins than the rest of the Cannubi hill. Winemaking matches Le Vigne apart from a slightly longer maceration, with ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. Aleste is the deeper, darker, more mineral of the pair.
A double magnum will age very slowly and is worth cellaring for the long term; serve at 16–18°C, decanted well ahead, with roast beef, game or aged hard cheeses.
