Description
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Cannubi Boschis comes from a subzone of the Cannubi hill that Sandrone has vinified separately since 1985, one of the decisions that brought the idea of the single-vineyard cru to the fore in Barolo.
Barolo covers eleven communes on the marl hills south-west of Alba, and Cannubi is the long ridge running north from the village of Barolo itself, historically the first site in the zone to appear by name on a label. Boschis is a particular terroir within that hill, near its northern end and directly across a small valley from the Sandrone winery. Sandrone farms 1.9 hectares of thirty-seven year old vines there. The parcel has good exposure to the south and south-east in a small amphitheatre, or conca, that holds warmth in the early morning, and the soils are sea deposits of calcareous clay with good drainage. Alessandro Masnaghetti's L'Enciclopedia delle Grandi Vigne del Barolo distinguishes Boschis from the rest of Cannubi in these terms: the wines, in general, have good body, much elegance, and more polished tannins. In the cellar Sandrone works with a relatively short maceration and raises the wine in large oak.
It needs time and a good hour in a decanter. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, roast game or aged Castelmagno.
