Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2017

Le Vigne is Sandrone's assembled Barolo, drawn from separate plots in different communes rather than from a single cru.

Barolo DOCG covers eleven communes in the Langhe hills south-west of Alba and is made only from Nebbiolo, a late-ripening variety that gives pale colour with formidable tannin and acidity. Le Vigne was first made in 1990 and follows the older Piedmontese practice of blending across villages so that each contributes what the others lack. Its components are Vignane in the commune of Barolo and Merli at Novello, joined by Baudana in Serralunga d'Alba from 2010 and Villero in Castiglione Falletto from 2011, with Le Coste di Monforte added later, from 2019. Luciano Sandrone bought his first plot on Cannubi in 1977 and built the present winery in 1998; his daughter Barbara has managed the estate since 1989. Each parcel is picked and fermented separately, spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in open steel tanks, with malolactic and ageing in 500-litre French oak barrels and about eighteen months in bottle.

It will repay ten to twenty years in the cellar and should be decanted if opened young. Serve with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno at 16-18°C.
