Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2019

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne is a blend across five communes, made in the manner that was once the norm for Barolo before single-vineyard bottlings took hold.

Le Vigne draws on several small parcels that differ markedly in altitude, soil and exposure, so the wine gives a broad reading of the appellation in a given year rather than the view from one hillside. The communes represented are Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba, the last from the Le Coste holding the family has farmed since 2000. In the cellar fermentation begins with wild yeasts in tank, with roughly twenty to thirty per cent of the fruit fermented as whole bunches and the destemmed portion kept as whole berries as far as possible. Time on skins runs from ten days to a month depending on the parcel. Malolactic conversion and ageing follow in mostly used 500-litre French oak casks for twenty to twenty-two months, and the wine is bottled unfiltered, as always here.

More approachable in youth than its structure suggests, though it will keep for two decades; decant and serve at 16-18°C with bistecca alla fiorentina, braised veal or aged Parmigiano.
