Description
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne is a blend of parcels from five communes, the estate's ode to the classic Barolo-wide assemblage.
Before single-vineyard bottlings became the norm, most Barolo was blended across the zone, and Le Vigne is Sandrone's reading of that tradition. Its component parcels differ markedly in altitude, soil and exposure, and between them they give a broad overview of Barolo in a given year. Since the estate's holding at Le Coste di Monforte came into the blend, farmed by Sandrone since 2000, the wine has drawn on five communes: Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba. The fruit ferments spontaneously in tank ahead of malolactic fermentation and ageing in mainly used 500-litre French oak casks. Roughly 20 to 30 per cent ferments as whole bunches, with a high proportion of whole berries in the destemmed portion. Macerations run from 15 days to three weeks, total time in oak is 20 to 22 months, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.
Unusually approachable young, fresh and translucent, yet good for fifteen years and more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast veal, mushroom risotto or aged Castelmagno.
