Description
Luciano Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne in three-litre double magnum, a blend of parcels drawn from five Barolo communes.
Le Vigne is Sandrone's version of the classic Barolo-wide blend that was once the norm across the zone. The parcels behind it are markedly different from one another in altitude, soil and exposure, and together they give a broad overview of the appellation in any given year. Since the estate's Le Coste di Monforte holding entered the blend, a site farmed since 2000, the wine has included fruit from Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Castiglione Falletto and Monforte d'Alba. Fermentation is spontaneous in tank, followed by malolactic fermentation and ageing in mainly used 500-litre French oak casks. Around 20 to 30 per cent of the crop ferments as whole bunches, with a high proportion of whole berries in the destemmed portion. Time on skins varied from 15 days to three weeks, total oak ageing ran 20 to 22 months, and the wine was bottled unfiltered.
A double magnum ages slowly and is worth holding for two decades or more. Serve at 16-18°C with a shared roast, braised beef or aged hard cheeses.
