Luciano Sandrone Barolo Vite Talin 2013

Luciano Sandrone Barolo Vite Talin is made entirely from one unusual Nebbiolo vine found in 1987 and propagated over twenty-five years, and this 2013 is the first commercial release.

Barolo DOCG lies in the Langhe hills, where Nebbiolo ripens late on calcareous marl and gives wines pale in colour but high in acid and firm in tannin. Luciano Sandrone bought his first plot on the Cannubi hill in 1977 and made his first wine the following year in his parents' garage. In 1987 he noticed a single vine among the rows of an old vineyard he rented from an elderly grower called Natale, known locally as Talin, carrying small, straggly bunches of unusually small, dark berries. Cuttings were propagated, and DNA work by Professor Schneider's team confirmed in 2017 that it was Nebbiolo. The wine comes from three vineyards in the commune of Barolo planted with that selection: Le Coste, Drucà and Rivassi. Grapes are destemmed, given a warm pre-fermentation maceration without oxygen and fermented in open wooden casks, then aged two years in French oak tonneaux, one in large casks and three in bottle.

A Barolo for the cellar rather than the short term, and one that repays a long decant if opened young. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef cheek, mushroom risotto or aged Piedmontese cheeses.
