Description
Vite Talin is made from a single unusual Nebbiolo vine that Luciano Sandrone spotted in 1987 and spent three decades propagating.
Barolo is normally read through its communes and crus, but this wine begins with a plant. In 1987 Sandrone noticed a Nebbiolo vine carrying small, scraggly bunches of unusually small, dark bluish berries in an old vineyard facing the castle of Barolo. The plot belonged to a farmer called Natale, known locally as Talin, who rented it to him when he was starting out; the name joins vite, Italian for vine, to the grower's nickname. Systematic propagation began in 1991, DNA analysis in 2017 confirmed the material as Nebbiolo, and the first commercial release, the 2013, appeared only in 2019. Luciano bought his first plot on the Cannubi hill in 1977 and made his first wine the following year; his daughter Barbara has run the business since 1989. The wine ferments spontaneously in open steel, spends three years in French oak — two in 500-litre tonneaux and one in large casks — then three years in bottle.
This is a long-term Barolo that repays a decade or more; decant and serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, game or aged Castelmagno.
