Luciano Sandrone Barolo Vite Talin 2017

Barolo Vite Talin comes from a distinct Nebbiolo clone Luciano Sandrone found in 1987 and propagated over decades, and is made in tiny quantity.

Vite Talin is now the official name of the clone, taken from the grower whose vineyard it was spotted in. Sandrone spent years propagating it before the first commercial release. The fruit today comes from three small plots in the commune of Barolo, Le Coste, Drucà and Rivassi, with only around 8,000 vines in production, yielding roughly 2,000 bottles. The berries are about half the size of ordinary Nebbiolo, under a gram against 2.2 grams for a Cannubi berry, so the juice is far denser in skin and pip relative to pulp. Winemaking is adapted to suit: extended maceration on skins, three years in 2,500-litre botti and a further three years in bottle before release. The result is more mineral and ferrous than the estate's other Barolos, traditional in structure while keeping the house sense of finesse.

Give it several hours open now, or cellar it for a decade or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast rib of beef, hare ragù or well-aged Parmigiano.
