Luciano Sandrone Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

This magnum of Sandrone Valmaggiore is Nebbiolo from a steep, sandy amphitheatre in Roero, a site Luciano Sandrone terraced and replanted himself.

Nebbiolo d'Alba covers ground on both sides of the Tanaro, and the Roero bank is the sandy one, giving lighter, more perfumed wines than the clay of Barolo and Barbaresco. Valmaggiore is a three-hectare amphitheatre that Sandrone identified some thirty years ago, when Roero was still dismissed; he had worked with fruit from the area as cellarmaster at Marchesi di Barolo and backed his judgement. Buying out the growers on the slope, terracing ground that runs to a fifty per cent gradient and replanting at 8,000 vines per hectare was a considerable risk, since the sandy soil dries out and erodes easily. Farming is organic. The wine is fermented and raised in the same unhurried way as the estate's Barolos, and shows the finer, more aromatic side of the grape rather than its denser one.

Approachable young and worth five to eight years in a magnum. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, agnolotti in butter and sage, or a mushroom tart.
