Description
Luciano Sandrone Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba in magnum, from a steep, sandy amphitheatre in the Roero.
Valmaggiore is a three-hectare, amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in the Roero area of Piemonte, north of the Tanaro where the soils turn markedly sandy. Luciano Sandrone established it some thirty years ago, at a time when nobody was talking about Roero, having worked with parcels here during his years as cellarmaster of Marchesi di Barolo. The undertaking was risky: slopes of up to 50 per cent, sand that dries out and erodes quickly, and the cost of terracing and replanting, all outside the Barolo region. The site is farmed meticulously and organically, and strict sorting each vintage delivers the purity and intensity the wine is known for. Fermentation is in tank, with malolactic fermentation and maturation in old French demi-muids for nine to twelve months. The result is a wine of tremendous perfume, chalky texture and finesse, quite distinct from the denser, darker styles of the clay-rich Barolo and Barbaresco soils.
Drinkable young and, in magnum, good for a dozen years or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, veal or mushroom risotto.
