Description
Luciano Sandrone Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba comes from a terraced sand vineyard in Roero that gives a lighter, more perfumed Nebbiolo than Barolo does.
Roero lies on the left bank of the Tanaro, across the river from Barolo and Barbaresco, and its soils are quite different: almost pure sand littered with limestone fossils, rather than the heavy clay marls of the Langhe. The Sandrone family established a continuous three-hectare holding in the Valmaggiore area in the early 1990s. It is a spectacularly steep terraced site, reaching a fifty per cent gradient in places, planted at a relatively high density of 8,000 vines per hectare. The chalky sand produces a markedly scented and elegant expression of the variety, with finer tannin than the denser clay-grown wines. The vineyard is farmed organically and picked with a strict sort, and vine age now contributes noticeably to the concentration of the fruit.
More approachable young than a Barolo, though it will keep for the best part of a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, veal or a dish of porcini.
