Luciano Sandrone Valmaggiore Nebbiolo d'Alba comes from a steep, sandy amphitheatre in Roero that the grower pioneered thirty years ago.

Nebbiolo d'Alba takes in the sandier country north of the Tanaro, and Valmaggiore is a three-hectare, amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in the Roero. Roero is now rising in prominence, which makes it easier to see what a pioneer Luciano Sandrone was in establishing the site three decades ago, having worked with Roero parcels as cellarmaster of Marchesi di Barolo. The risks were considerable: gradients reaching 50 per cent, sandy soils quick to dry out and erode, terracing and replanting to fund, and a place then thought incapable of greatness. The vineyard is farmed meticulously and organically, with strict sorting each year. Fermentation takes place in tank, with malolactic fermentation and maturation in old French demi-muids over nine to twelve months. The wine has a tremendous perfume, chalky texture and finesse, distinct from the denser, more structured styles grown on the clay-rich soils of Barolo and Barbaresco.

Lovely from release and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, agnolotti or a mushroom and thyme risotto.
