Description
Lucien Muzard Santenay Champ Claude vieilles vignes rouge comes from one of the domaine's oldest parcels on the Santenay slope.
Santenay closes the Côte de Beaune to the south, where the escarpment turns west and a fault line brings a jumble of marl, clay and limestone close to the surface. Champ Claude lies on the slope above the village, on stony clay-limestone that gives a firmer and more structured red than the flatter ground below. Vieilles vignes here means genuinely old plantings, with the lower yields and deeper roots that bring concentration and a longer finish. Domaine Lucien Muzard et Fils farms organically from its base in the village; the fruit is destemmed, fermented with a moderate cuvaison and aged in oak barrel with a modest share of new wood before bottling.
Structured and earthy, it wants a year or two in bottle and suits game, beef and mature cheese; serve at around 16 degrees.
