Lucien Muzard Santenay Clos Faubard Premier Cru 2023

Lucien Muzard Santenay Clos Faubard is a premier cru red from a family domaine at the far southern end of the Côte de Beaune.

Santenay lies past Chassagne-Montrachet at the southern limit of the Côte de Beaune, a village known in the nineteenth century as much for its thermal spring and casino as for its vineyards. The slope here begins to swing away from the classic east facing line of the Côte d'Or, and the soils run to limestone and marl over clay, which gives Pinot Noir a firm, earthy, red fruited character rather than perfume. Clos Faubard is one of the commune's twelve premiers crus, on the rising ground above the village towards Santenay-le-Haut. Domaine Lucien Muzard is a family estate in the village, around sixteen hectares with a concentration of premier cru parcels, run by the brothers Claude and Hervé Muzard.

Structured and savoury rather than showy, it rewards a few years in bottle and suits roast lamb, game birds and mushroom dishes; serve at around 16 degrees.
