Description
Lucien Muzard Santenay Maladière is a premier cru red from one of the better regarded sites in the commune.
Santenay sits at the southern extremity of the Côte de Beaune, where the escarpment turns west and the vineyards spread over limestone and marl with deeper clay at the foot of the slope. Pinot Noir grown here has a firmer, more earthbound cast than in the villages to the north, with dark cherry fruit and a savoury finish. La Maladière is a premier cru on the mid slope above the village, part of the run of sites that also takes in Les Gravières and Clos Tavannes, and it is generally counted among Santenay's best ground. Domaine Lucien Muzard is a family estate in the village farming around sixteen hectares, much of it premier cru, worked by the brothers Claude and Hervé Muzard.
Firm and savoury in youth, it opens with five years or so and suits lamb, beef and mushroom dishes; serve at around 16 degrees.
