Lucien Muzard Santenay vieilles vignes rouge 2023

Lucien Muzard Santenay vieilles vignes rouge is an old-vine village red from the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune.

Santenay is the last commune of the Côte de Beaune proper, where the slope swings west and a geological fault brings a mix of clay, marl and limestone to the surface. Its reds are firm and savoury, with dark cherry fruit, an earthy undertone and rather more grip than the softer communes to the north, and they remain among the better value village wines of the Côte. Domaine Lucien Muzard et Fils is based in the village and farms organically; this cuvée is drawn from the domaine's older parcels, where lower yields and deeper rooting give more concentration. The fruit is destemmed, fermented with a moderate cuvaison and aged in oak barrel with only a small proportion of new wood.

Firm and savoury, it suits roast lamb, duck and mushroom dishes; serve at around 16 degrees.
