Description
Lustau East India Solera is a sweet sherry from Jerez that takes its name from one of the stranger discoveries in the history of wine.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries casks of sherry were carried as ballast on ships bound for the East Indies, and merchants found that the wine came back improved by months of heat and motion in the hold. Some began sending it on the round trip deliberately, and the style became known as East India. Lustau, founded in Jerez de la Frontera in 1896, recreates it by ageing an oloroso in the warmest part of the bodega and blending it with sweet wine made from sun-dried Pedro Ximénez grapes, the whole matured through a solera. The result is a rich, oxidative sherry of the sort that once travelled halfway around the world.
It is best served at around 13 degrees with dark chocolate, blue cheese, dried fruit or walnuts, and will keep for months once opened.
