Mader Gewurztraminer Dry 2023

Mader Gewurztraminer Dry is a genuinely dry Alsace Gewurztraminer made from declassified Grand Cru fruit.

Gewurztraminer is usually left with some sweetness in Alsace, and a fully dry example is uncommon. Jean-Luc Mader makes one from fruit grown on the Grand Cru slopes at Hunawihr that he chooses to declassify, fermenting the must right out so that only 3.7 grams per litre of residual sugar remain. The variety's naturally low acidity means the winemaking has to be precise: an early pick to hold freshness, whole bunch pressing, a cool fermentation in stainless steel and a spell on fine lees to fill the mid palate. The estate is farmed organically and the wine is bottled under screwcap without oak.

Aromatic yet dry, with the variety's spice and oily texture, it handles Alsace onion tart, Munster and mildly spiced Asian dishes; serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
