Mader Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives 500ml 2018

Mader Gewurztraminer Vendanges Tardives is a late harvested Alsace dessert wine bottled in half litre format.

Vendanges Tardives is a legally defined category in Alsace, requiring fruit picked well beyond normal ripeness and a minimum must weight that only good autumns allow, with chaptalisation forbidden. Jean-Luc Mader waits for the fruit on his organically farmed parcels at Hunawihr to shrivel on the vine, sometimes with a share of noble rot, and picks by hand in successive passes. The must ferments slowly and comes to a natural halt, leaving 107 grams per litre of residual sugar in the finished wine. No oak is used, the bottle is sealed with cork rather than screwcap, and the wine is held in the cellar for several years before release.

Unctuous but held together by the variety's spice, it suits foie gras, blue cheese and fruit tarts, or a glass on its own; serve well chilled at around 8 degrees.
