Mader Pinot Blanc Helfant 2022

Mader Pinot Blanc Helfant is a single site Alsace white from a parcel that runs up to the edge of the Rosacker Grand Cru.

Helfant is a lieu-dit on the flank of the hill at Hunawihr, bordering the Rosacker Grand Cru, and the vines sit on the same band of dolomitic limestone and clay that gives Rosacker its firmness. Jean-Luc Mader farms the parcel organically and keeps the crop low, treating it as a clear step above the estate's village Pinot Blanc. The fruit is whole bunch pressed, fermented slowly in stainless steel with indigenous yeast and held on fine lees to build breadth before bottling under screwcap, with no oak used. Residual sugar of 1.7 grams per litre leaves the wine dry, with a chalky, mineral edge that the ordinary bottling does not have.

Fuller and firmer than most Pinot Blanc, it suits roast chicken, veal and creamy fish dishes; serve at 10 degrees.
