Mader Pinot Gris 2024

Mader Pinot Gris is a fully dry Alsace Pinot Gris from an organically farmed family estate at Hunawihr.

Pinot Gris in Alsace can be made in any register from bone dry to richly sweet, and Jean-Luc Mader takes the dry route, picking for ripeness of flavour rather than sugar. The vines lie on the limestone and clay slopes around Hunawihr, below the Rosacker Grand Cru, and the estate is farmed organically throughout. Bunches are pressed whole and fermented cool in stainless steel, with the fermentation carried right through so that only 0.9 grams per litre of residual sugar remain. Several months on fine lees add weight without any recourse to oak, and the wine is bottled under screwcap. The result is a smoky, broad shouldered white that keeps its line.

Fuller than the estate's Pinot Blanc but still dry, it suits roast chicken, pork, smoked fish and mushroom dishes; serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
