Mader Pinot Noir 2024

Mader Pinot Noir is a light, unoaked Alsace red from an organically farmed domaine at Hunawihr.

Pinot Noir is the only red grape permitted in Alsace and has gained ground steadily as growers plant better material on limestone slopes that once went entirely to white varieties. Jean-Luc Mader farms organically around Hunawihr and takes a restrained approach to the variety, destemming the fruit, fermenting in small vats with gentle extraction and maturing the wine in tank rather than new oak so the fruit stays transparent. Yields are kept low and the wine is bottled young. The style is deliberately fresh and unforced, with fine tannin, bright acidity and no more oak influence than the wine needs, which is none at all.

Light bodied and best served cool, it suits charcuterie, roast poultry and grilled salmon; serve at 14 to 15 degrees.
