Description
Mader Riesling Rosacker is a dry Grand Cru Riesling from the limestone hill that encircles the village of Hunawihr.
Rosacker is the Grand Cru immediately above Hunawihr and is best known for enclosing Clos Sainte Hune, but the wider site has a clear character of its own: dolomitic limestone with a high active lime content over clay and marl, giving Rieslings that are firm, saline and slow to open. Jean-Luc Mader farms his parcels here organically and works them by hand. The fruit is whole bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeast in stainless steel and left on fine lees through the winter, with no oak used. Bottled at 0.5 grams per litre of residual sugar and sealed under screwcap, it is the driest and most structured Riesling in the range.
Austere and mineral when young, it rewards a few years in bottle and suits langoustine, poached chicken and aged Comte; serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
