Description
Maison C. Thiriet Côte de Nuits-Villages Aux Montagnes comes from a four-hectare parcel of 1970s vines below the Comblanchien quarry.
Aux Montagnes lies at the southern end of the Côte de Nuits, directly beneath the Comblanchien château and its quarry, on the belly of the slope at 260 metres. There is only twenty-five centimetres of clay-limestone before the vines reach bedrock, and the clay here is notably red and high in iron. Camille Thiriet works with vines from Nicolas Potel’s former holdings planted in the 1970s, and this was the first wine she made when she started out in 2016; she remains convinced the site can give a wine of premier cru quality when handled with care. Although the plan had been to destem, the bunches looked good enough that fifteen per cent went in whole, and the wine was raised with twenty per cent new oak. It is bright and juicy, with raspberry and redcurrant fruit and a long, smoky close.
Drinking well now and good for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast chicken, pork with mustard or a plate of charcuterie.
