Maison Ponsot Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes comes from a plot on the upper slope near Grands-Échezeaux and a smaller parcel of old vines in the middle of the clos.

Clos de Vougeot covers fifty hectares behind its medieval wall and is divided among many owners, so the position of a given parcel within it matters a great deal. The upper section, close to Grands-Échezeaux, drains freely and is generally held to be the best ground in the clos. Ponsot's holding there amounts to 0.4 hectares in Petit Maupertuis, supplemented by older vines in Quatorze Journaux, below the central part of Château de la Tour's rows. Average vine age is around fifty years. The first Ponsot bottling of this grand cru was made in 1999. The house works with very low yields, late harvesting and ageing in older barrels only, and the wine that results is a broad, deeply structured reading of the vineyard built for long keeping.

Give it ten years and expect it to run for decades. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, hare or a well-aged hard cheese.
