Description
Maison Ponsot's Corton-Charlemagne is a grand cru white drawn from two parcels on the Aloxe side of the hill, first produced in 2009.
Corton-Charlemagne wraps around the upper slopes of the hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune, taking in land in Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny. The higher, cooler band of marl and limestone that carries the Chardonnay gives whites known for scale allied to firm structure and the ability to age for many years. The Ponsot bottling is made under the family's négociant label, Maison Ponsot, and blends fruit from two sites in Aloxe: one in Le Charlemagne itself, on the boundary with Pernand, and a second in Les Languettes, a little further round the hill. Winemaking follows the cool, unshowy approach used across the Ponsot range, with the aim of keeping the site's energy intact rather than layering on new oak.
Best given five to ten years and decanted if opened young; serve at 10-12°C with lobster, roast poultry or a creamy soft cheese.
