Description
Maison Ponsot Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne is drawn from two parcels in Aloxe-Corton and was first produced in 2009.
Corton-Charlemagne wraps the upper slopes of the Corton hill, the one great white Grand Cru of the Côte de Beaune, and its character shifts markedly with aspect and altitude. Ponsot works one parcel in Le Charlemagne, on the Pernand-Vergelesses border, and a second in Les Languettes, a cool site wedged between Les Pougets and Le Corton and lying directly below the woods, which is known for a pronounced expression of the hill's white marl soils. Both plots sit high on the slope and the vines average forty years of age. The wine is a Maison rather than Domaine bottling, made from purchased fruit under the estate's direction. It matured for sixteen months in eight-year-old barrels, so the oak contributes structure rather than flavour.
Tightly wound in youth, it is best from four or five years and will hold well beyond ten; serve with lobster, roast chicken or aged Comté at 10 to 12°C.
